What education did you have before you took the Visual Effects for Film and Television course?
I did my bachelor's degree in Communication and Design in Turkey. It was the closest course to Visual Effects at the time. It helped me set up my foundation in the field. Then I moved to New York. During my time there, I took After Effects classes at NYU and some online VFX courses.
Tell us a bit about your experience at the college.
Working in VFX and for movies has always been my life goal and Seneca opened the doors for me to fulfill my dreams. If you do a quick research, you will see Seneca leading all the lists, and there is a reason for that. I spent great time and met great people there. The labs are 24/7 open. Sometimes we would go up to the school to work on our assignments and reels on snowy Toronto nights. It is definitely a part of my life that I will not forget.
How do you use the education you got at Seneca in your job today?
Seneca taught me each step to finish a shot, starting from tracking to compositing. But I have always leaned into lighting as I had a lighting background, even though it was in a non-VFX field. Especially, learning Nuke gained me a lot. As a lighter, my main software is not Nuke. But I am creating slap-comps to give to compositors. And if necessary, I sometimes do a quick roto on some objects in the shot. So the compositor will have a better understanding and have a starting point.
What advice would you give potential students who are thinking of taking the course?
If you are thinking of getting into a Visual Effects school, Seneca would be a great option for you. The program will prepare you for the industry in the best possible way. You will finish the program with a demo reel. Your lecturers will help you so much. But it will always be your work, your ideas, your quality. So keep working hard throughout the program and end it with a great reel.
But keep this in mind, learning should never stop, even after you are hired. You should always be up-to-date in this industry as it is mainly related with technology which always advances.
Good luck.
